Scientific understanding of magnesium oxide (magnesia) began with the identification of the element magnesium. In 1755, Joseph Black confirmed in Edinburgh that magnesium was an element and distinguished magnesia from lime. As the source material for metallic magnesium and its alloys, the development of the magnesium oxide industry is closely linked to the application of magnesium alloys. Characterized by their lightweight nature, ease of machining, corrosion resistance, and vibration-damping properties, magnesium alloys are widely used in the manufacture of casings for automobiles, motorcycles, and 3C products. China is a major global producer of magnesium and magnesium oxide.


In 2013, China abolished export tariffs on magnesium and magnesium alloys. During the "12th Five-Year Plan" period, China proposed leveraging its magnesium resource advantages to advance magnesium material technology through breakthroughs and to promote the application of magnesium alloys.
