Magnesium carbonate is an inorganic compound with the chemical formula MgCO3. It is a carbonate of magnesium that appears as elongated white crystals or a white amorphous powder. Its molecular weight is 84.31, derived from the atomic weights of magnesium (24.31), carbon (12.01), and oxygen (16).


Magnesium carbonate consists of magnesium ions and carbonate ions held together by ionic bonds in its solid state. When heated to 280°C, it begins to decompose into magnesium oxide and carbon dioxide. It has low solubility; at 20°C, only about 1.5 grams of magnesium carbonate will dissolve in 100 grams of water.

 

Magnesium carbonate does not occur naturally but is produced synthetically. It is widely used in various fields, including food additives, pharmaceuticals, ceramics, glass, pigments, and cosmetics. In the food industry, it serves as a leavening agent and anti-caking agent, improving texture and preventing clumping. In the medical field, it is used to treat conditions such as excess stomach acid and to relieve stomach pain.


It is worth noting that while magnesium carbonate has many applications, excessive intake can have adverse effects on the body. Therefore, relevant regulations and guidelines should be followed during use to ensure safety and effectiveness.
